About Us

At Prince of Peace Preschool, we believe that children learn best through play and hands-on exploration. Our indoor and outdoor classrooms provide a fun and stimulating learning environment where children can investigate and explore using their tremendous curiosity while developing kindergarten readiness skills. Our students explore our outdoor nature playground and garden year-round and on a daily basis. One of our primary goals is to develop a positive self-image in each child while practicing social, cognitive and language skills; affirming that he or she is a unique, special person. We utilize Creative Curriculum by Teaching Strategies to guide our learning with studies and activities that enable children to develop confidence, creativity, and life-long critical thinking skills. In addition, we utilize Learning Without Tears for pre-writing and incorporate a variety of music, process art, and gross/fine motor activities throughout the school day.

 Preschool News

In October we will be a few weeks into what we call our “Outdoor Days”. Our students spend one day a week outdoors learning and exploring on our outdoor playground and classroom, Chipmunk Hollow. Over our 20 years we’ve had a focus on the natural world, ecology and getting outside in rain, snow and shine. During the covid pandemic we moved our entire school out of doors with a hybrid program-half of our days our program was held outside and half of our days were spent at home, exploring take home kits the teachers prepared for the students each week. What did we discover? Our students loved learning outside! Our kids that were usually active in our large group sessions were more engaged and overall, we had fewer behavior challenges. We still explored all of the literacy, math and science pre-k academics we explored in our traditional program, but we creatively found ways to discover and learn in the natural world. After the pandemic we realized we wanted to continue learning out of doors for part of our week. So now each class has an “Outside Day”, only going indoors for the last 1⁄2 hour of their morning when the other classes come outdoors. We now have outdoor lessons based on the Tinkergarten curriculum with a fall focus on, well, FOCUS! Using the natural world and play, we will help our learners explore sustaining attention using curiosity and their senses, how to shift attention and adjust, control impulses, and evaluate options and then act. Sounds like Executive Function, doesn’t it? It is! And while that may sound dry, the students are exploring lessons named things like Treasure Pie, Hunt for Gold, Patterns in Nature, Tiny Friends, Weather Walk, and more! They have hands on challenges, engaging picture books and read aloud and plenty of opportunities to move their bodies!
