About Us

At Prince of Peace Preschool, we believe that children learn best through play and hands-on exploration. Our indoor and outdoor classrooms provide a fun and stimulating learning environment where children can investigate and explore using their tremendous curiosity while developing kindergarten readiness skills. Our students explore our outdoor nature playground and garden year-round and on a daily basis. One of our primary goals is to develop a positive self-image in each child while practicing social, cognitive and language skills; affirming that he or she is a unique, special person. We utilize Creative Curriculum by Teaching Strategies to guide our learning with studies and activities that enable children to develop confidence, creativity, and life-long critical thinking skills. In addition, we utilize Learning Without Tears for pre-writing and incorporate a variety of music, process art, and gross/fine motor activities throughout the school day.

Learning About Generosity and Cooperation through Soup!

At POPPS we have an annual tradition of reading the folktale, Stone Soup, and then making our own version of soup the week before Thanksgiving. Stone Soup is the story of a traveler that visits a village. The villagers do not have enough means to share a meal, but the traveler is clever and starts a soup over an outdoor fire flavored with just a stone! The curious villagers hear him say, “Mmmm, this is delicious soup, and it would be even better if it had a tomato!” Pretty soon each villager adds another ingredient-celery, potato,
rice, seasonings, salt, pepper, etc., and a wonderful soup is made that feeds and warms the whole village. The villagers enjoy fellowship and a meal, learning about generosity and cooperation while the traveler moves on with a full belly.  This folktale is believed to have originated in France, and has been translated into many languages. Sometimes the warrior is a monk, a soldier returning from a conflict, hobos, and even animals! The ingredients added reflect the culture or region of the version, and some soups include sesame oil, rice, fish, bird eggs, corn. Some of the versions have different names: Axe Soup, Quill Soup and even Cactus Soup! We try to explore a different version each year, as some of our students will enjoy this feast three times, and this year we will be reading Stone Soup by Heather Forest and Quill Soup by Alan Durant. We hope our students come away feeling the joy of community while learning that even small contributions can make a difference!
